Maritime Museum

On the 23rd of March, Wednesday 6g and 6e went to the Maritime Museum. We went there to learn about sailing.

After morning tea we went on the Ted Ashby boat ride. We walked down the stairs and power walked down the jetty to the boat.

I sat down on the boat next to James. A man explained the instructions. As we were backing out of the dock we helped to pull up the main sail. After we finished with the main sail we had races to see who could put up the back sail. My group had 15.98 seconds. I really liked pulling up the sails. When we finished with the racing we got to walk around the diminutive boat. When I looked at the sea I saw miniature waves coming from the other boat going past us.

It was my second time going past the Auckland Harbour Bridge. It got kind of chilly when we went under it. Once we sailed passed it, the captain said we were turning around. After 5min we had to sit down because we turning into the small space on the dock for the boat.

Salty Sam Tour. We first went to the Maori and Pacific room where they had lots of wooden boats. We found big boats and small boats and there was a waka, like the waka in the name of our school. Next we walked into the whaling room. It had a big whale and a little whale on the back wall. Salty Sam told us about whaling in New Zealand. After that we went into the rocking room, we sat down on the seat as Salty Sam told us about what would happen if you were sailing in a boat to New Zealand back in the old days. Then I felt it was rocking! After that was the cannon blast. The cannon blast was very ear splitting. We hade to countdown to 1 so we counted like this 5, 4,3,2,1 fire! I laughed when it went off.

My favorite part of the day was the cannon blast. I learnt a lot at the end of the day. I was very happy =-)
